The things they don't tell you
when you're promoted to manager

What's inside

Five things nobody warned you about

Short, practical, and written for managers who are already stretched. No theory. No filler.

01
The moment you stop being one of the team

Promotion changes the relationship whether you want it to or not.

02
What's quietly draining you — and why rest won't fix it

The exhaustion isn't about workload. It's about conversations you haven't had yet.

03
Why avoided conversations don't disappear

Delay doesn't buy time. It builds debt.

04
How you set the standard without realising it

Your team watches what you tolerate — and adjusts accordingly.

05
The gap between good intentions and the right words

Most managers know what they want to say. They just don't know how to say it.

About Nicola

I've been in these rooms for over 40 years

I started managing people at 17 when I took over the family business after my father was hospitalised. Nobody gave me a framework. I worked it out the hard way — through difficult conversations, mistakes, and a lot of learning on the job.

Since then I've worked with managers and leaders across the Civil Service, the care sector, and UK businesses of every size. I'm a CMI Chartered Fellow, a qualified coach, and the author of How to Make Difficult Conversations Easier in the Workplace.

This guide is everything I wish someone had handed me on day one.
